Students must open a Block Account in Germany before applying for a visa.
The required amount for 2025 is €11,208 (approximately €934 per month) to cover living expenses for one year.
Do I still need a Block Account if I am going to a private university?
Yes. The Block Account is mandatory for all international students, regardless of whether you are enrolled in a public or private university.
It serves as official proof of financial means, showing that you can cover your living expenses while studying in Germany.
Payment of tuition fees to a private university does not replace the requirement for a Block Account.
Can I work while studying in Germany?
Yes. International students are allowed to work 120 full days or 240 half days per year.
During the semester, students can work up to 20 hours per week, and during semester breaks, full-time work is permitted.
Can I go to Germany with my spouse while I study?
In most cases, your spouse cannot travel with you at the start of your studies.
You must first arrive in Germany, register your residence, and obtain your residence permit.
After that, your spouse can apply for a family reunion visa from Pakistan.
You must show sufficient funds and suitable accommodation to support your spouse.
The spouse may also need to provide basic German language proof (A1 level) at the time of visa application.
What is Uni-Assist and when is it required?
Uni-Assist is a central application and document evaluation service that checks international student qualifications on behalf of many German universities before forwarding them.
Not all universities use Uni-Assist — some accept direct applications instead.
What is a VPD (Vorprüfungsdokumentation)?
A VPD is a document issued by Uni-Assist after assessing your academic qualifications.
It confirms whether your previous education meets the German university entrance requirements.
Is the VPD valid for multiple universities?
No. A VPD is university-specific and valid only for the university you applied to through Uni-Assist.
Even if the VPD document doesn’t show a university name, it is digitally linked to that institution.
If you are applying to multiple universities, you must request separate VPDs for each.
How long is a VPD valid for?
A VPD is usually valid for 1 year from the date of issue.
It can be reused only for the same university if reapplying within that period.
Do my documents need attestation or apostille for Germany?
Yes. All your academic documents must be officially attested in Pakistan. The process is as follows:
Matric (10th Grade) and Intermediate (12th Grade):
- Attestation from the relevant Board of Education
- Verification by the Inter Board Committee of Chairmen (IBCC)
Higher Education Degrees (Bachelor, Master, etc.):
- Attestation from the respective University
- Verification by the Higher Education Commission (HEC)
Final attestation:
- After Board/University, IBCC, and HEC verification, all documents must be attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).
Transcripts: Yes, transcripts must also be attested along with degree certificates. This is mandatory because German authorities require proof of detailed academic records for admission and visa purposes. Without attested transcripts, your application may be rejected or delayed.
Note: Apostille is not required for Pakistani documents for a German study visa.
